Position Summary

Under the direction of the Dean, Applied Research and Innovation, the Associate Dean, Applied Research and Innovation is accountable for the leadership, initiation, operational excellence and coordination of the applied portfolio for the College. The Associate Dean is responsible for building and fostering an applied research culture that engages faculty and students in all Humber schools and departments, actively leading and participating in applied research where and when appropriate, planning, organizing, assisting in staffing decisions and delivering the College’s applied research activities, including:
• Developing and leading applied research
• Developing appropriate research policies and procedures
• Establishing and managing research support services and staff
• Assisting in the development of academic schools research plans
• Encouraging scholarly activities
• Supporting student-based research projects
• Promoting college research initiatives to government, industry and community
The incumbent will foster relationships with funders, applied research partners, and members of the Canadian innovation system, and will guide the development of all funding applications within the Applied Research and Innovation portfolio. Additionally, the Associate Dean provides operational guidance for the Centres of Innovation and the Centre for Entrepreneurship to ensure that they work independently, but in concert with each other to effectively create environments conducive to interdisciplinary education and experiential learning. The incumbent will foster and secure private and public funding to support research and innovation, hire researchers, provide guidance and delegate administrative support for the Research Ethics Board (REB), and; advise the college on issues related to the responsible conduct of research involving human participants.


A Ph.D. with applied research experience and an understanding of research ethics (TCPS2 Certification at a minimum) is preferred. Nine years of industry and/or community experience outside of an academic environment is required, along with demonstrated administrative or leadership experience at the postsecondary level. Additional qualifications include demonstrated understanding of the legal and ethical requirements in the research field; experience with provincial, federal and other funding/grant opportunities; understanding of intellectual property and commercialization; partnership development and relationship management; budget development experience; sound knowledge and proven ability assessing opportunities and associated risk in a variety of disciplines.
