Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

Recent changes to the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) legislation have resulted in a new system known as WHMIS 2015, which includes updated hazard classes, new hazard pictograms and new supplier label and material safety data sheet requirements. The legislation stipulates that WHMIS 2015 must be fully implemented by December 2018.  However, until that time, employers are required to ensure that employees who work with or around hazardous materials are trained in both the outgoing WHMIS 1988 system and the new WHMIS 2015 requirements.


To ensure that Humber complies with the new training requirements, Health and Safety Services is offering in-class WHMIS training sessions that incorporate the requirements of the new WHMIS 2015 system along with a review of WHMIS 1988. This training is mandatory for Humber employees who handle hazardous materials, work in areas where hazardous materials are used, or supervise others who work with or handle hazardous materials.
