Hazardous Materials Spill Procedure

1. Evacuate

Evacuate the immediate area and prevent re-entry where hazardous material is likely to endanger occupants.

2. Isolate

Isolate the spill area by closing doors, turning off ventilation systems, and avoiding further environmental contamination. If safe to do so, and trained, use Emergency Spill Control Equipment to contain spill and prevent entry to drains and sewer system.

3. Notify Security

4. Identify

When notifying Security about a hazardous material spill, provide as many details as possible:

  1. Identify* the hazardous material(s) involved / nature of spill
  2. State:
    • your name/title
    • whether anyone is injured or ill
    • name(s) of hazardous material(s)
    • the size of the spill (approximate quantity)
    • exact location of the spill (Campus, building, floor, room/area)
    • any environmental contamination (sewers, drains, water, grounds)
    • what action has been taken to contain the spill, if any

5. Report

During Day

Security will report the incident to:

  • Emergency Services (Fire Dept., Ambul., Police): 911
  • Occupational Health & Safety Manager: x 5673
  • Occupational Health & Safety Coordinator: x 5021
  • Manager of Public Safety (North Campus): x 4977
  • Manager of Public Safety (Lakeshore Camps): x 3148
  • Director of Public Safety: x 4417
  • Associate Director of Public Safety: x 4047
  • Director Facilities Management: x 4340

The Occupational Health & Safety Coordinator or designate will report the spill to:

  • Spills Action Centre, Ministry of the Environment: 1-800-268-6060
  • Newalta: Emergency Response: 1-800-567-7455

After Hours

Security will report the incident to:

  • Emergency Services (Fire Dept., Ambul., Police): 911
  • After-hours Administrator On-Call: Emergency on-call list

The On-Call Administrator will report the spill to:

  • Spills Action Centre, Ministry of the Environment: 1-800-268-6060
  • Newalta: Emergency Response: 1-800-567-7455

6. Clean-Up

External

Newalta: Emergency Response

Internal

Do not clean up spill unless you have:

  • *knowledge of the hazardous material(s)
  • proper spill clean up materials
  • appropriate training
  • means for proper containment
  • proper personal protective equipment

* Obtain and review the MSDS for appropriate spill response action.
