About Us

The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion (Centre) provides human rights and equity programs and services to the Humber Community. All Centre initiatives integrate the complex and often contradictory ways that socially constructed identities intersect and interlock. As such, initiatives extend beyond binaries such as male/female, black/white, gay/straight, able/disabled to include multiple layers of identity that are experienced simultaneously. This intersectional and integrative approach grounded in a practice of care is woven throughout the Centre’s programs and services.

What We Do

The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion ensures that equity, diversity and inclusion are instilled throughout Humber.

Increase Human Rights, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Awareness

Ensure Legislative Compliance

We lead and coordinate compliance with Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Actthe Anti-Racism Act, Employment Equity Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code and the O. Reg. 131/16: Sexual Violence At Colleges And Universities through policy development and targeted educational awareness and communication strategies.

  • We support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action
  • We promote college and community-wide initiatives to increase representation among faculty and staff in the four employment equity designated groups (Indigenous people, women, racialized people and persons with disabilities) and persons with diverse gender and sexual identities.

Strategic Communication and Relationship Building

  • We work collaboratively with stakeholders across the College.
  • We maintain current and compelling Human Rights, AODA & EDI website that provides comprehensive and current online resources.
  • We work with local, national, and international communities, community organizations, and other postsecondary institutions to enhance Humber's visibility.

Ensure Timely Complaints Resolution

  • We investigate complaints pursuant to Humber’s human rights related policies.
  • We provide early intervention into human rights related concerns through consultation, mediation, conciliation and referrals to internal and external resources.

Co-lead Humber’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committees:

  • We support and co-lead Humber's Equity and Inclusion CommitteeAODA Committee and Sexual Assault/Sexual Violence Awareness Committee to champion innovative thinking in their respective areas.
  • We support the development and functioning of affinity groups throughout the College.
